Girls Hoops Teams Positioning For Section Seeding

  As the 2011-2012 regular season starts to wind down, several local high school girls basketball teams find themselves jockeying for position as the section seedings will be determined this week. The sections no longer go by a point system but by a QRF rating system, which is based upon strength of schedule similar to how College Football teams are ranked.

  The Duluth East Greyhounds came out firing on all cylinders Saturday night as the Greyhounds built a huge first half lead that proved too much for the Lumberjacks to overcome. The Greyhounds win by a score of 103-44 Thursday night at Duluth East High School as the Greyhounds pick up the non-conference victory at home.

CEC Girls Lead Nordic All-Conference Ski Teams With Four Athletes

  Despite a lack of snow local high school Nordic ski teams have found a way to get out and compete, and as a result, the Lake Superior Conference has named their 2011-2012 All-Conference boys and girls Nordic teams with 10 skiers on each squad.

Strong Second Half Propels Eskomos Over Cloquet

  ESKO- Tuesday night saw Marc Peterson nail a long range 3-pointer as time expired in the first half. The shot cut the Lumberjacks five point lead to two at halftime and gave the Eskomos a momentum spark that carried over into the second half as the Eskomos defeated the Lumberjacks by a score of 63-50 Tuesday night at Esko High School.

Lady Jacks Fall In Double Overtime

  The Cloquet-Esko-Carlton girls hockey team seemed like they were going to advance into the section finals Saturday as they had built a two goal lead after two periods, but it was Grand Rapids-Greenway who scored two third period goals to tie the game at 3-3 and sent the game into overtime where the Lightning came away with the 4-3 win in double overtime, ending the Lumberjacks season.

Strong Third Period Gets East Past Lumberjacks

  A few weeks ago the Duluth East boys hockey team pounded Cloquet-Esko-Carlton 7-0. Last night through two periods the Lumberjacks held the Greyhounds off to the tune of a 2-2 tie, however the depth of East paid off with a strong third period and they gained a 5-2 victory over CEC at Amsoil Arena in Duluth.

CLOQUET- With Cloquet coming off a big win Tuesday night over Moose Lake-Willow River; the Lumberjacks were hoping to make it two consecutive wins of section 7AA opponents. It wasn’t to be however, as the Blue Devils shot down Cloquet by a score of 74-63.

  The Cloquet boys basketball team jumped out to a nice halftime lead only to see Duluth Marshall Battle back and tie the game and force overtime where Cloquet prevailed and came away with a three point win 56-53 in double overtime.

  Section 7AA boys hockey brackets have been announced with the Cloquet-Esko-Carlton Lumberjacks receiving the fifth seed. The Lumberjacks will begin the 2012 playoffs by traveling to number four seed Elk River on Tuesday February 21.

  The Cloquet-Esko-Carlton Lumberjacks picked up a huge road win on Saturday night as the Lumberjacks defeated the Stillwater Ponies by a score of 4-2 in Stillwater. The Lumberjacks, who were coming off two consecutive losses to the two top ranked teams in the state, rebound with the two goal win as the Lumberjacks end their regular season on a winning note.

  The Grand Rapid Thunderhawks knocked off the Cloquet Lumberjacks for the second time this season by a score of 38-23 in a section 7AAA match-up. The first time these two teams met, it was a forty point win back in December 65-25.

  The Denfeld Hunters used a huge first half as the Hunters blew past Cloquet to come away with a 76-48 win Thursday night at Cloquet High School. The Hunters had four players finish in double figures as they went on to win this Lake Superior Conference contest by 28 points.

  CLOQUET - A four goal outburst in the second period helped the Cloquet-Esko-Carlton girls hockey team to a 4-0 win Friday night over Cambridge-Isanti at Northwoods Credit Union Arena in Cloquet. The four unanswered second period goals coupled with a 16 save performance by CEC netminder Katie Beckman sealed the 4-0 shutout win for the Lumberjacks on parent’s night.
