  The Grand Rapids Thunderhawks made the Section 7AAA standing very interesting as the Hawks and the Thunderhawks battled Tuesday night in a section match-up in which Grand Rapids defeated Hermantown by a score of 50-34.

  As the 2011-2012 regular season starts to wind down, several local high school girls basketball teams find themselves jockeying for position as the section seedings will be determined this week. The sections no longer go by a point system but by a QRF rating system, which is based upon strength of schedule similar to how College Football teams are ranked.

  One goal achieved and hopefully still more to come for the Hermantown Hawks boys hockey team. On Friday night the Hawks picked up a 4-0 shut-out victory over Hibbing/Chisholm to wrap up the first perfect 25-0 regular season in the history of the storied program.

  Hermantown/Proctor led the way with three 1st Team All-Conference selections for the Lake Superior Conference Alpine Ski-Team. Matthew Borash, Brendon Viaene and Hans Eggert were the trio of skiers that lead this year’s team.

  The Lake Superior Conference has made their 2011-2012 All-Conference selections in girls hockey. Leading the team is a trio of players from the Duluth Denfeld/East team and a pair of Cloquet-Esko-Carlton Lumberjacks.

  The Hermantown Hawks boys hockey team improved to 23-0 on the season as the Hawks shut out Red Wing by a score of 6-0 Saturday afternoon in Hermantown. The Hawks had six different players score as they win this non-conference match-up.

  The Hermantown boys basketball team picked up a huge sectional win on Saturday afternoon over the Chisago Lakes Wildcats allowing the Hawks to hold on to their current fourth place standings in section 7AAA. The Hawks built up an early first half lead and went on to win by 10 points as the Hawks win at home 78-68.

  Minnesota's last unbeaten hockey team made sure that record would stay intact Tuesday night with a 7-0 trouncing of rival Duluth Denfeld last night at the Amsoil Arena in Duluth. The Hermantown Hawks used scoring from six different players to take the road win and push their record to 22-0.

  Entering Thursday nights Lake Superior Conference hockey battle in Cloquet the Hermantown Hawks came in sporting an undefeated record and impressive credentials. The #1 ranked Hawks left Cloquet with their undefeated record intact and the satisfaction of overcoming some major adversity in their 2-1 victory over Cloquet-Esko-Carlton.

  The Duluth East Greyhounds had nine players score in a balanced effort as the Greyhounds knocked off the Hermantown Hawks by a score of 63-44 at Duluth East High School on Thursday evening.

  The Hermantown Hawks perfect season is still intact after taking a 5-3 win at home against New Prague on Saturday. Hermantown is 20-0, but needed a strong second period and a key goal in the third period to take the win.

  Hermantown’s Cory Anderson entered Tuesday night’s game against Hibbing needing only five points to reach the 1000 point plateau; and after a quick basket things looked like Anderson would reach that mark quickly but a series of events postponed that feat until the second half.

  The Hermantown Hawks picked up a huge Conference win on Friday night as the Hawks defeated the Ashland Oredockers by a score of 73-47 at Ashland High School on Friday night. The win moves the Hawks two points behind Superior in the overall Lake Superior Standings.

  Hermantown Junior Megan Danelski captured the state girls Alpine championship on Wednesday at Giants Ridge in Biwabik. Danelski, who had placed third in last year’s Event, had combined runs of 36:72 and 38:71 to finish in first place in the girls state alpine ski meet.

  Despite a lack of snow local high school Nordic ski teams have found a way to get out and compete, and as a result, the Lake Superior Conference has named their 2011-2012 All-Conference boys and girls Nordic teams with 10 skiers on each squad.

  With one game left to play in the regular season the Hermantown Hawks remain a perfect 24-0. The latest victims of the high-flying Hawks were the Little Falls Flyers, who dropped a 2-0 decision to Hermantown on Tuesday night at Hermantown Arena.

  Monday night saw the Barnum Bombers put themselves in perfect position for a rematch with the Esko Eskomos when the Bombers knocked off Hermantown and now will face the Eskomos Thursday night in Barnum for the Polar League Championship.

Grand Rapids now controls their own destiny in the section standings as the playoffs fast approach. The Thunderhawks defeated Hermantown by a score of 58-38.
