  With the 2011 fall sports season coming to a close and slowly winter sports are taking hold, let us not forget what a great accomplishment it has been for the Esko Eskomos lady athletes this fall. The Eskomos made three state tournament appearances in three different sports with a host of remarkable athletes.

  CARLTON - Running a 50 mile ultra-marathon is a brutal undertaking when the runners know the course well. Having little knowledge and no experience on the course makes the task all the more difficult. Those challenges were little more than speed bumps for first time course runner Sam Jurek, who won the 2011 Voyageur Trail Run 50 mile marathon in Carlton on Saturday with a winning time of 7:27.35.

  CLOQUET - Under a rare sunny sky in Cloquet, runners, walkers, young folks in strollers and dogs all got together for the annual Hooterz Fun Run on Saturday morning. A total of 230 people participated in the event to support breast cancer.

  CLOQUET - Wednesday was National Letter of Intent signing day for colleges across the United States. In a conference room at Cloquet High School two Lumberjack athletes signed to ply their wares in college. Kaitrin Rathe signed with UMD to play goalie for the Bulldog soccer team and Haylee Peterson signed with Minnesota State-Mankato.

  Marisa Shady has been running at the state cross country meet for the past four seasons. Each year Marisa improved her placement until Saturday when she could not place any higher than where she finished, and that was as the Minnesota State Girl’s Cross Country Champion for 2010. In doing so she also helped lead her team to a 5th place finish overall.

  CLOQUET- For the second straight year the Esko boys and girls cross country teams captured the section 7A cross country meets at the Cloquet Country Club. The Esko boys team placed three finishers in the top ten, while on the girls side Esko had four finishers in the top ten to capture the section championships. The section 7A meet featured 220 runners, and there were 18 boys and 11 girls’ teams that had enough runners to qualify in the team competition.

  The Section 7A CC Meet will be held Fri. Oct. 29th at the Cloquet Country Club beginning at 1:00 PM.

  The Section 7A Cross Country Meet scheduled for tomorrow October 28th has been postponed. Current conditions including 5 inches of snow on the ground and trees down at the Cloquet Country Club caused this postponement. The Meet will be held on Friday October 29th at the same time. If Cloquet is unusable a new site will be determined tomorrow.

  Sixty-nine cross country teams representing 92 schools and 2120 runners all competing in the 60th annual Swain cross country meet Saturday at Enger Park Golf Course in Duluth saw the Esko girls and boys cross country teams shine on this huge cross country stage. The Esko girl’s team finished second, while the boy’s team placed fifth.

  The Esko boys and girls cross country teams showed their early season strength on Thursday by winning their respective divisions of the Babbitt Lions/Gene Ritsche Memorial Run.

  CLOQUET, MN-- A field of 263 runners and walkers participated in the fourth annual Pumpkin Run and Walk five-kilometer race held at Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College in Cloquet on Saturday, October 24.

  A number of NSO area teams participated in the Proctor Lions Invitational cross country meet on Tuesday. Sarah Chasson of Cromwell/Floodwood won the girls race and Denfeld's Matt Kero took top honors for the boys.

The second annual Cloquet River Walk/Run was held Saturday morning in Cloquet. Organized by Churchill Elementary Partners in Education (PIE), the event features both a one mile and a 5k walk/run.

  Two Esko High School students inked their names to national letters of intent on National Signing Day. Kate Shelerud and Caitlin Lilly committed to play their sport at the collegiate level.

  CLOQUET - Most local businesspeople are huge believers in giving back to the community. The thing that makes Jeff Leno different is that he began planning a 5k race as a way to give back to the community before he moved back to the area or started his business. That planning culminated Saturday morning with a hugely successful 1st annual Sawdust 5k race.

  After winning the Section Cross Country Meet, Matt Welch went on to the State Cross Country Meet on November 6th at St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minnesota. His performance at the meet was possibly the best he has ever done.

Three team champions return this Saturday, Nov. 6, when the Minnesota State High School League’s 2010 State Girls’ and Boys’ Cross Country Running Meet is conducted at St. Olaf College in Northfield. The Waseca girls are in the hunt for their second title in Class A, and the Elk River girls are looking to make it two in a row in Class AA. The boys of Plainview-Elgin-Millville are in the hunt for their second consecutive Class A championship.

  The Esko boys and girls cross country teams captured the Polar League championships last week in Grand Marais. Both teams would have a close battle with Cook County but in the end it was the Eskomos taking both titles.

CLOQUET - The Esko boys and girls cross country teams were both considered  favorites among the Section 7A cross country community. They didn't disappoint at the section meet on Thursday at the Cloquet Country Club, grabbing both section championships.

  The Cloquet Country Club will be inundated with high school cross country runners Thursday due to the boys and girls cross country Section 7A and 7AA sectional tournaments to be held on Thursday in Cloquet.

Grand Rapids won the AA girls title at the Swain Invitational Cross Country Run on Saturday at Enger Park Golf Course. The Cloquet girls team finished 21st.

Several local schools competed Thursday in the Nemadji Invitational at the Nemadji Golf Course last week. The event featured over 500 runners in three different levels--from middle school to junior varsity to varsity competition in both boys and girls divisions. Local schools participating in the event included Albrook, Carlton, Esko, Cloquet, Proctor, and Cromwell-Floodwood.
