  MOORHEAD, Minn. – The St. Scholastica volleyball team was one set away from seeing its season come to an end for a second time in the last three matches, but for the second time came back to win in five sets over the College of Saint Benedict in its first-ever NCAA Tournament match on Friday at the Moorhead Regional.

  Despite a sterling 28-1 record going into the Minnesota State Girls Volleyball Tournament, the Esko Eskomos were not given a top 4 seed. Instead the Eskomos drew the #4 seed Stewartville a perennial tournament entrant making their 20th appearance. The Tigers delivered a near perfect performance in routing the Eskomos 25-12, 25-20 and 25-18 to move on to the semi-finals in Class AA.

  On Thursday the Esko Eskomos will compete in the 2010 Minnesota Class AA State Volleyball tournament. Despite having the second best record in AA and one of only three teams in the entire tournament with one loss on their record, the Eskomos did not receive one of the top four seeds. Esko will take on #4 seed Stewartville at 5:00pm at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul. This is the second state tournament appearance for the Eskomos, who previously made the trip down south in 2004.

  Although they sported the second best record among the eight Class AA teams to make the Minnesota High School State Volleyball tournament, the Esko Eskomos (28-1) did not get one of the top four seeds and were placed in a random draw. By luck of the draw the Eskomos will face #4 seed Stewartville High School (25-5) in the first round of playoff action Thursday at 5:00pm at the Xcel Energy Center.

  Twice during the high school volleyball season the Cloquet Lumberjacks had defeated Hermantown. The last time was two weeks ago when the Jacks dethroned the Hawks as Lake Superior Conference in a win at Cloquet. It was a different story on Wednesday night as the Hawks downed Cloquet 3-0 in the Section 7AA semifinals played at UMD.

  The Section 7AA girls volleyball team has now moved into the semi final round after Friday night’s set of games. Moving on to final four action are; Cloquet, Hermantown, Esko and Hibbing, all of whom were the highest seeds in their respective quarter final games.

  The Barnum Bombers opened the Section 5A volleyball playoffs with a win at home over the Cromwell Cardinals by a 3-0 margin. These two schools battled earlier this season with the Bombers winning in four games. The scores Thursday night were 25-17, 25-16, and 25-11. The win moves the Barnum into the sub section semi-finals Friday night against the number one seed East Central Eagles.

  It was a tough end to the season for the Moose Lake-Willow River volleyball team on Wednesday night. The Rebels played host to Duluth Marshall in the first round of the Section 7AA tournament, but it was the Hilltoppers who slipped into town and left with a surprising 18-25, 27-25, 26-24, 24-26 and 15-12 win.

  Esko junior Stephanie Bandelin has decided to attend St. Cloud State University and play volleyball for the Huskies in 2013. Bandelin, a 6'-0" junior outside hitter helped lead the Eskomos to the state volleyball playoffs will be an added dimension to the Huskies team.

  The Esko Eskomos fell Saturday in the girl’s consolation finals at the Xcel energy center as the Eskomos closed out another very successful season. Friday the Eskomos defeated Visitation by a score of 3-2 but the fell Saturday to Sauk Center in three straight games to finish sixth overall in the girls 2011 state class AA tournament.

  Katie Thun and Stephanie Kallberg combined for 21-kills on Friday night as the Hermantown Hawks opened the high school volleyball season with a 3-1 victory over the Duluth Marshall Hilltoppers.

  Northland Volleyball Club kicked off their 2011 Junior Olympic Volleyball tournament season this last weekend at the Minnesota North Spring Fling Tournament. Eighty five teams competed in four different age divisions in the tournament which was held at various locations throughout the Northland. Northland Volleyball Club was represented by eight teams in the 14s, 16s and 18s divisions.

  DULUTH- The Esko Eskomos girls volleyball team has being playing volleyball not only during the volleyball season, but in the off season in anticipation of one day making an appearance at the girl’s state volleyball tournament. That dream came true Saturday evening as the Eskomos swept the Hermantown Hawks to take their 1st Section 7AA crown.
